Nebiyu D. Fanta

Skill # 1

Hello, I am Nebiyu D. Fanta from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. I am a senior at Roanoke College and will be graduating in May 2023 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics and a minor in Math. I have a dog called Sancho, that is back in Ethiopia. I love skittles and like to watch Football (real football not American Football). My favorite football teams are Manchester United and Real Madrid.

Skill # 2

The articles talks about Gay Pride events that are to be held in Roanoke Virginia from September 1990 to October 1990. The article is an example of a digitized document. Metadata is used in the process of stitching multiple pages into one and categorizing the various articles.

Skill # 3

Using OCR research women’s history

“NO ADAM IN SOUTH SEA EDEN.” The Dawson News (Dawson, Georgia), March 30, 1910. SOURCE: Chronicling America, Library of Congress.

“Western Australia the Scene of Another Anti-Man Effort. English Women at Head of It” is an article about a colony that is dominated by British women. Men are not allowed to participate or take part in owning land.

Using Word Cloud for Docs to compare the presidential inaugural address between John Quincy Adams (1825) and John Adams (1797).

Word clouds generated from John Quincy Adam’s U.S. presidential inaugural address, March 04, 1825 (left) and John Adam’s U.S. presidential inaugural address, March 04, 1797 (right). Source: The American Presidency Project.

I chose to look at the inaugural address between John Adams and John Quincy Adams because they were the first pair of father and son presidents. In addition, I wanted to see if there was an improvement from the father to the son or if the son was going to be a shadow of his father. Most people would agree the father John Adams was the better president.

Using machine-reading to research the three main types of economic concepts

Google Ngram analysis of the three main types of economic concepts Capitalism, Communism, and Imperialism. Source: Google Books Ngram Viewer.

I looked at the three main types of economic concepts from 1850 and 2010. Economic concepts are a major factor in our day to day lives, as well as long term standard of living. Capitalism reaches its peak in the 2000’s. Meanwhile Communism peaked from 1940 to 1970 when the Soviet Union was at its peak. Lastly, Imperialism peaks from 1960 to 1980 which surprising to see. I expected that it would peak from the mid 19th century to the early 20th century, due to colonialism.

Skill # 4

The RED Devils and Their Noisy Neighbors

“The RED Devils and Their Noisy Neighbors” (2023), made using imported data, in part from Programming Historian. Source: created using Google Maps.

A spatial representation of the history of British global fat imports in the 1890s and locations that are top of my “Must Visit Places”. The map is made by utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS), a computer based system that is used to visualize, analyze, and identify a geographic location. The city of Manchester was/is known as the worlds first industrial city. Now days it is more known for being the home of Manchester United and their noisy neighbors Manchester City. The building of cannels in Manchester were used as a means of importing fat, as well as income for the city. Being the first industrial city, Manchester contributed greatly to the development of the society we know today.

Skill # 5

Skill # 6

“west ham bubbles” by Zedkah, “Manchester United Football Club” by Neisantos, “Football party in the streets” by Kaumodaki, Pixabay sound effects.

Audacity was not working for me, therefore I used an app called Wondershare Filmora. It is a free video and audio editing app that is easy to use. Pixabay is a copyright free website to download sound effects. However, I still gave credit to the people who recorded and titled the audio files.

In this audio, I share my experience of becoming a passionate fan of Manchester United, my beloved football team. Although my father supported a different team, him and my older brother played instrumental roles in instilling my love for the game, which has become more than just a sport to me. It has helped me build stronger bonds with my family members and has opened doors for me to connect with people from different backgrounds and languages.
