Skill 1
I am Jalen, a student at Roanoke College and I will be graduating Spring 2023 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics with a Mathematics minor. I enjoy spending my free time gaming and watching sports. I definitely classify myself as a video game guru, with Rainbow 6 Siege being my favorite. I am a huge football, basketball and baseball fan, with baseball being my favorite. My teams are the Boston Red Sox, Miami Dolphins and the Charlotte Hornets.
Skill 2
Just to overview the digital archive, it was about the gay and lesbian alliance the Roanoke Valley area. It mentions some coverage of those who are for them in the presidential race. It also mentions a little on one of the candidates and why they should vote for him.
Skill 3
Part 1:
Part 2:
On the left is the words President Joe Biden’s used most in his inaugural address speech and on the right is President Donald J. Trump’s most used word in his inaugural address speech. They both have the most used word “will” as that is common amongst most if not all presidents in their speeches. They also have most of the same words used but a few and that is how you can kind of decipher which political party they are apart of. The whole point behind me choosing these two is because in my eyes, and others as well, they are complete opposites of each other. The goal here was two show how two polar opposites sometimes use the same terms and words to reach and gain their viewers attention by saying what they want to hear which is typically what happens with all political parties.
Part 3:
“Google Books Ngram Viewer.” Google Books, Google, https://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=Underweight%2Coverweight%2Cobese&year_start=1960&year_end=2019&case_insensitive=on&corpus=en-2019&smoothing=0.
I wanted to see how much the words underweight, overweight and obese were used in the US. This is primarily because America is at an all time high in obese rates and it has gotten to the point were there is a new term called “super obese.” This Ngram shows us how much the words were used, and it has a range from 1960-2019. As we interpret the graph we can see that the term underweight was used less compared to the others, overweight and obese. as you can see at the end, towards 2019, all terms are decreasing in use. In all, I wish the graph went further and could capture some information from present day because there has been a spike in people trying to be healthier and I wonder if that plays a part in how much these 3 terms are used.
Skill 4
This is a map of the with a focus on fat imports and my hometown. I was born and raised in Lynchburg, VA. As you can see once you access the map I have a few highlighted locations there. One of them is being the place where I purchased my first firearm at the age of 21. The next spot is Liberty University which is the college that my girlfriend attended before she graduated after the Fall Semester of 2022. The next location is where I grew up playing Little League baseball from ages 7-13. It would then change to me playing baseball at my high school which is one of the next highlighted locations. And finally we have the Lynchburg Expressway which can get you anywhere in the city fairly quick.
